Starting in 2006, Christian Andersen began to make his mark as XI, heralding the coming storm of dubstep music in Canada. Through the seminal Subtrac parties in Toronto, he helped pave the way for dubstep and bass music to take root in North America.
He would go on to release records on legendary labels including Hotflush Recordings and Lo Dubs, perform at festivals such as MUTEK, WMC, and Bass Coast, and appear at influential party series including Dub War in New York City and Low End Theory in Los Angeles.
Along the way, XI shared stages with acts including Distinct Motive, The Prodigy, and Pendulum, and embarked on major tours with artists such as Zeds Dead and Araabmuzik.
As a collaborator with prolific artist Adam Marshall under the moniker Graze, he was nominated for Best Electronic Music Album of the Year at the 2014 JUNO Awards. Graze also released on Dekmantel’s UFO imprint, along with a series of records on their home label, New Kanada.
XI is one of Canada’s living legends of bass music and has been a pivotal figure in the scene, pushing the boundaries of style and genre through celebrated side projects including Ultragamma and Crushfield.
XI has recently returned to his roots, with dubstep once again at the forefront of his work. Following releases including the Deepcut EP and the Thug Magik EP, along with support from many of the scene’s most exciting artists, he is set to make his mark on dubstep again in 2024 and beyond.
